1. Cheryl Boyd Zimmerman Ph D and Nicole Brun-Mercer PhD
Choosing and Using New Words for Vocabulary Teaching Success
Effective vocabulary teaching targets useful words with engaging activities that prepare students for the language tasks they need most. The presenters demonstrate easily accessible tools for selecting salient words and exploring their use, from collocations to grammatical behavior. The session spotlights high-interest tasks including corpus- informed writing models and interactive practice.
Dr. Zimmerman taught in the TESOL program at CSUF for 20 years; her work focused on L2 vocabulary acquisition. She retired in 2016 and currently hosts a monthly “Research Group” for former students and colleagues interested in presenting and publishing language-related research.
Nicole Brun-Mercer holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff. She has taught English around the world and researches corpus linguistics, lexicogrammar, reading, and composition.

Communicative Transformation: Increasing Student Success by Saying More with Less!
Interaction is crucial when practicing another language, especially initiating and maintaining conversations; however, learners do not need advanced understanding to create these opportunities. The presenters will share tools and pragmatic games/activities that quickly transform learners at all levels into speakers who can make themselves understood and participate in authentic conversations.
Catherine Moore has 14 years of experience in ESL, is a TESOL Ed.D Candidate, and is published in both TESOL journals and a business pronunciation software training system.

Take your classroom games beyond icebreakers and time-fillers by utilizing board games to provide students with low-stakes, authentic, targeted language instruction. Presenters will demonstrate some of their favorite games along with scaffolding techniques, before encouraging participants to develop their own activities for integrating board games.
Pete Torrez teaches credit and non-credit ESL at Santa Monica College and Los Angeles Mission College. Jessup Yenser teaches credit ESL at Santa Monica College. As game enthusiasts, they believe in the power of games to promote language acquisition. They lead a weekly board game group for ESL students and have shared their board game-based pedagogy in previous CATESOL presentations.

He has recently launched a new podcast called DIESOL, which focuses on digital integration in ESOL with ISTE Emerging Leader, Ixchell Reyes.
