UC Santa Barbara Margi Wald UC Berkeley Context is Key Vocabulary and Grammar Instruction for Academic Reading and Writing How can teachers best assist their multilingual students in choosing appropriate language structures to shape, connect, and structure their ideas in academic writing? The presenters will discuss how effective word choice is dictated by a word’s grammatical and lexical context, how vocabulary choices often drive the use of grammar, and how students can use corpus-based resources such as learner dictionaries and concordancers to further develop their word knowledge and academic writing proficiency. They will also demonstrate how instructors can incorporate a range of vocabulary and grammar activities into their academic reading and writing courses. Activities will include awareness-raising “noticing” tasks as well as composing and editing practice.
