Plenary SpeakerBruce Rubin
CSU, Fullerton ALP, Interim Director Critical Thinking in ESL: Sequence, Substance, Style & Skill Leveled Activities and Focused Language for ESL Classrooms Description: Nothing is more empowering academically than critical thinking, but teaching and practicing it in ESL contexts presents some daunting challenges. Students from some cultures may be unaccustomed to the habit, while language barriers can make academic discourse doubly hard to engage in and decode. But this should not stop ESL instructors from incorporating critical thinking techniques early in the language-learning process. Beginning with an overview of Carol Numrich's "Sequence of Critical Thinking Tasks" (2010) and concluding with her thoughts on "Discourse Synthesis" (2016), Mr. Rubin will model a carefully sequenced series of interactive exercises that can be tailored to engage diverse ESL learners in reading, listening, writing, and speaking classes at virtually all proficiency levels. In addition, he will focus on language cues ranging from simple modals and frequency adverbs to "hedge words" (Pinker, 2015) that help students read between the lines and more accurately analyze what they see, hear, and read. About Bruce: Bruce Rubin has taught ESL since 1989 in a variety of local venues, including a private college in Riverside, a proprietary adult school in Rowland Heights, the Adult Ed division of the North Orange County Community College District, and the American Language Program at Cal State Fullerton. He is also an English Language Specialist with the U.S. State Department and the author of Inside Reading, Level 3, published by Oxford University Press. Mr. Rubin is currently the Interim Director of the ALP at CSUF. |
